How to Clean Wine Spills from Carpeting

Glass of red and white wineOne of the most common stains our professional home cleaners encounter is red wine on carpeting. This is especially common in the homes of people who like to entertain frequently.

The problem is that by the time our cleaners get to the wine stain, it can be hours or even days after the wine originally was spilled. At that point, the wine has set into the fibers of the carpet and may be next to impossible to completely removed.

House Cleaning Boca Raton — Immediate Action Required

The time to attack wine stains is moments after they occur, not days later. Like most stains, the sooner you act the better off you will be. if you can get to the red wine stain before it fully sets into your carpet, the odds of eliminating it permanently are much higher.

The first thing you need to do is to blot out as much of the red wine as possible using a white cloth. The more you can soak up initially, the less you will have to work to remove what remains later.

After blotting, pour a little cold water directly onto the wine stain. This will help dilute what remains of the red wine, making additional blotting more effective.

Keep blotting until you can no longer get any of the stains out using this method.

Then you will want to create baking soda past using a three-to-one ratio of water to baking soda. Apply this directly to the remaining red wine stain and allow it to dry completely. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much paste you apply.

Then when it is completely dry, use your vacuum cleaner to suck up what remains of the red wine stain. If you get to it early enough, you usually can get it all out.
